No this is not a joke, it is a growing trend in Europe. Many donkey farms are established, in Belgium, Greece, Italy,France,Turkey, etc. Asses' milk is used for dairy, cheese, soaps and cosmetics, even in liqueurs. The average price of one liter of donkeys' milk is $19. In Italy donkeys are milked or raised for meat. Some red Italian salami have young donkey meat.
The Telegraph reported that researchers at the University of Naples, Italy have found that donkeys' milk is very nourishing because it contains more lactose and less fat than cow's milk. It is high in calcium and helps reduce cholesterol and protect the heart because it contains omega-3 fatty acids. The researchers also concluded that donkeys' milk is very similar to woman's milk, and can be used in young children who are allergic to cow's dairy products. The researchers, who presented their findings at the European Congress on Obesity in Turkey, said its "consumption should be encouraged."

لا هذه ليست مزحة، بل إن هناك اتجاه متزايد في أوروبا لاستهلاك حليب الحمير. فقد تم تأسيس مزارع حمير كثيرة، في بلجيكا و اليونان و إيطالياو فرنسا وتركيا وغيرها. و يستخدم حليب الحمير في الألبان والجبن وفي صناعة الصابون ومستحضرات التجميل وحتى في المشروبات الكحولية. وبلغ متوسط سعر اللتر الواحد من حليب الحمير 19 دولار. ففي إيطاليا تحلب الحمير أو تربى من أجل لحمها. فبعض أنواع السلامي الحمراء الإيطالية مصنوعة من لحم صغار الحمير.
ذكرت صحيفة التلغراف أن الباحثين في جامعة نابولي بإيطاليا وجدوا أن حليب الحمير مغذي جدا لأنه يحتوي على لاكتوز أكثر ودهون أقل من حليب البقر. وبه نسبة عالية من الكالسيوم ويساعد في تقليل نسبة الكوليسترول وحماية القلب لأنه يحتوي على أحماض أوميغا 3 الدهنية. وخلص الباحثون أيضا أن حليب الحمير مشابهة جدا لحليب المرأة، وأنه يمكن استخدامه للأطفال الذين لديهم حساسية لمنتجات الأبقار. وقال الباحثون، الذين قدموا نتائجهم في المؤتمر الأوروبي الخاص بالبدانة في تركيا أنه "ينبغي تشجيع استهلاك حليب الحمير".

Donkey's milk used to be a substitute to breast milk until the beginning of the twentieth century. It is said that Cleopatra, Queen of Ancient Egypt, took baths in asses' milk to preserve the beauty and youth of her skin. Legend has it that no less than 700 asses were needed to provide the quantity of milk necessary for her daily bath. Asses' milk was also formerly used in medicine. Its healing virtues have been known described by Hippocrates (460 – 370 BC), the father of medicine, for numerous purposes, such as liver troubles, infectious diseases, fevers, oedema, nose bleeds, poisonings, and wounds.

وقد استخدم حليب الحمير في الماضي كبديل لحليب الأم حتى بداية القرن العشرين. ويقال أن كليوباترا، ملكة مصر القديمة، كانت تستحم في حليب الحمير للحفاظ على جمال وشباب بشرتها. وتقول الاسطورة أنها كانت تحتاج إلى ما لا يقل عن 700 حماراً لتوفير الحليب اللازم لحمامها اليومي.
وقد استخدم أيضا حليب الحمير سابقا في الطب. فمن خصائصه المتعددة المعروفة والتي وصفها أبو الطب أبقراط (460-370 قبل الميلاد) مثل مشاكل الكبد والأمراض المعدية والحمى والوذمات ونزيف الأنف وحالات التسمم وتضميد الجروح
